About the Book
This anthology gathers papers presented at a seminar organized by the Sahitya Akademi in March 1998, offering a comprehensive evaluation of Indian poetry over the five decades following Independence. The collection delves into fundamental conceptual questions, examines paradigm shifts, and challenges established literary canons by foregrounding marginalized voices. It explores the development of modern sensibilities in Indian poetry in various linguistic contexts, relating them to broader cultural issues, and also scrutinizes post-colonial avant-garde trends, such as the feminist and Dalit movements.
The anthology is divided into three sections:
-
Modernism in Retrospect: Examines the historical, political, and aesthetic aspects of modernism.
-
After Modernism: Articulating Resistance: Focuses on alternative poetic trends that challenge mainstream poetry.
-
Poetry as Discourse: Some General Issues: Addresses contemporary issues in poetry, including translation challenges.
Contributors to the volume include prominent figures such as Dilip Chitre, E.V. Ramakrishnan, Ramesh Chandra Shah, Makarand Paranjape, Rukmini Bhaya Nair, Chandrakant Patil, M. Asaduddin, Lakshmi Kannan, Raj Lukshmee Debee, K.D. Kurtkodi, P.P. Raveendran, S. Carlos, Sudheesh Pachauri, and Udayan Vajpeyi, among others.
