Understanding India

Author: Abraham Jacob

Binding: paperback

Number Of Pages: 605

Details: About the Book

An attempt to understand Indian consciousness through the study of its major literary and philosophical works is made in this exploration. It also delves into the evolving nature of Indian thought and its impact on society. The major religious movements and the consequent stratification of society, which have resulted in our present sensibilities, are contrasted with the political and reform movements over the centuries. The exploration traces the evolution of Indian culture from what can be called the lotus bud of wonder and excitement in the Vedas to the twisting and accumulating baggage of superstition, creating sectarian beliefs that were all lumped into an idea called Hinduism.
