About the Book
In this work, Surender Gopal reflects on his scholarly journey, which began in 1962 when he was awarded a scholarship under the cultural exchange program between the governments of India and the USSR. As part of this scholarship, he proceeded to Moscow for advanced studies in history. During his time there, Dr. K. A. Antonova, a renowned academic at the Institute of Peoples of Asia (now known as the Institute of Oriental Studies, Academy of Sciences, USSR), suggested an intriguing research topic: the impact of Western expansionism on the pre-industrial economies of India. The study aimed to explore Indo-European interactions, particularly in relation to the development and level of local Indian economies, as well as the nature of local business and artisan communities. The research focused on Gujarat, a region that had experienced the earliest European influence. The book sheds light on the economic and social dynamics of this interaction, offering valuable insights into the early stages of globalization and its effects on India’s regional economies and communities.
