About the Book
This monograph by M. V. Nadkarni is the outcome of his eight-month visit to the German Democratic Republic (GDR), commonly known as East Germany, during 1973-74, as part of the Indo-GDR cultural exchange programme. The book is largely based on published material, as well as numerous discussions with scholars, managers, and other professionals during his time in East Germany. The notes he gathered during his visit allowed him to capture data up to 1972, but he later revised his draft with the help of updated statistical yearbooks and other publications received from the GDR Embassy in India and Professor Dr. E. Rempel of the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Horticulture, Humboldt University, Berlin. As a result, the monograph includes data up to 1974, with some additional information from 1975 and 1976.
The work provides a detailed examination of East Germany's economic structures, policies, and the insights gained from direct interactions with various experts in the field. Nadkarni's revision incorporates the most current data available at the time, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the GDR's economy during this period.
